When Should You Go See the Dentist?

Have you visited your dentist lately? While you may not spend much time thinking about visiting the dentist, it’s vital to know when to go and how often to have your teeth checked. According to the American Dental Association, most people should visit their dentist at least once every six months for a regular checkup. That said, you may find that you need to go to the dentist outside of your normal visits. Here are a few situations you might find yourself in that justify that trip to the dentist’s office.

If You Experience Pain

If you experience any discomfort or pain in your teeth or mouth, it’s important to schedule an appointment with the dentist right away. If the pain persists, don’t allow it to get worse. Pain could be a sign of a more serious problem and should be addressed as soon as possible. Your dentist will determine if it’s something simple like a cavity or something more serious such as a tooth abscess.

If You Notice Changes

If you notice any changes in your teeth like discoloration, chips, or signs of infection, contact your dentist right away. If your teeth are in need of fixing, you’ll need professional help to get the job done. Seeing an experienced, reliable provider of dental services is the best way to ensure that you maintain good oral health. They can even conduct tests like X-rays to diagnose the issue and provide you with the best treatment plan.

If You Need Preventive Care

As you may already know, the best way to stay out of the dentist’s office is to visit regularly for preventive care. During a preventive dental visit, your dental hygienist will perform a cleaning that removes plaque and tartar buildup. Plaque and tartar are difficult to remove at home and can cause decay and gum disease without intervention. Only a professional has the tools necessary to help you maintain healthy teeth and gums. Your dentist can also apply fluoride treatments or sealants that protect against cavities. If you haven’t had a cleaning done in a while, now is the perfect time to get it done!

While our dentists recommend that most people see us at least twice a year for regular checkups, other factors like lifestyle habits or existing health conditions can affect how often you should go.
